The seated foreign servant, clothed in royal color and marked by dignity, looks up to the prophet after risking his life to defend God’s messenger. The setting evokes the fall of Jerusalem under Babylon, when fear, judgment, and mercy met in the streets of the besieged city.

The scene draws from Jeremiah 39:15-18, where the Lord sends a personal word to Ebed-melech: he will be delivered because he trusted in God. This faithful Cushite had earlier rescued Jeremiah from the cistern, and God did not forget his courage.
